These cut-out pieces are my experience studying abroad in Norway during 2013. For the first time in my life I was very far away from the fast, noisy, and chaotic environment of city life. The beautiful and quiet environment was so peaceful that I could feel it in my soul. This caused an unlimited flow of inspiration and desire to create my art and the ideas grew in me so quickly and organically.
I introduced new styles and methods of painting into my art so when I painted I wasn’t just using oil and canvas. I started to use poster and photo paper, acrylic, print, and water color to express my feelings and add to my work. I don’t want the focus of the work to be very realistic and traditional, I want it to be different and more open to interpretation. Similarly, the idea that the most expensive and priceless thing in the world is the human soul. And in the end, everything will eventually belong to the earth, the wind, the water, and the air. When we die, our bodies will go back to nature and become a part of the endless cycle of the universe. They're the celebration of life.
24 Solar Terms Paper-cut project (Artstreet, Sacramento, 2017)
My project is a series of Chinese paper cuts. The inspiration for this piece is the 24 seasons of the Chinese Lunar calendar. For each of the 24 seasons I want to create different elements of man, woman, and nature.
This project is based on human beings and their relationship with the sun and earth. Each season has a beautiful history and a detailed backstory that explains it’s importance to Chinese people. Most of these stories come from the blue-collar stories that have been passed down from generation to generation among China’s farmers and laborers.
